Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's death the family, it was managed by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. She joined at the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal place for her. Ford was then able to apply for a spot at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but at the time she already had made her debut on television in the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. She worked on stage regularly, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
